Cystic Fibrosis
1. Definition: a life-threatening genetic disorder that affects multiple organ systems such as respiratory, digestive, reproductive systems etc.
a. Produces thick mucus that blocks airways, decreases digestive functions, and causes bacterial infections
b. Symptoms:
i. Coughing of wheezing
ii. Shortness of breath
iii. Respiratory illnesses (eg, pneumonia, bronchitis)
iv. Weight loss
v. Greasy stool
vi. Very salty-tasting skin
vii. Male infertility
3. Diagnosis:
a. Clinical symptoms of cystic fibrosis
b. Sweat test: to measure the amount of salt in a person’s sweat
4. Treatment
a. Antibiotics
b. Chest physiotherapy
c. Anti-inflammatory therapy (eg, ibuprofen)
d. Vaccination
e. Lung transplantation in serious cases
