1. Definition: a rare inherited disorder that blood does not clot normally due to clotting factor deficiency
- Hemophilia A: deficiency of factor VIII; More common and more severe than other types of hemophilia
- Hemophilia B: deficiency of factor IX; also called Christmas disease
- Hemophilia C: deficiency of factor XI
2. Symptoms:
a. Unexpected excessive bleeding from cuts or injuries
b. Blood in your urine or stool
c. Nose bleeding
d. Many large bruises
e. See doctor immediately when you have sudden severe pain, extreme fatigue, repeated vomiting, and double vision
3. Diagnosis:
a. Blood tests for clotting factor deficiency
4. Treatment:
a. Slow injection of hormone desmopressin (DDAVP)
b. Infusion of clotting factor
c. Aminocaproic acid; prevents breakdown of blood clots
d. Physical therapy
e. Quick first aid for minor cutes
f. Vaccinations against hepatitis A & B
g. Requires life-long treatment in severe cases
