Acne

If you suffer from embarrassing acne, treatment options are available. Christos Skin Clinic has helped countless patients pinpoint the causes of their acne, clear their skin and retain their confidence.

Overview

There are several types of acne: acne vulgaris (common acne), cystic acne and adult acne. It is a common and troublesome, but fully treatable condition. People of any age can get acne but it is most common in teenagers, young adults and some women in their 30s and 40s. Acne is caused by clogged pores (from the body's oil production), bacteria on the skin (propionibacterium or P. acnes) and hormones. Stress, as well as other contributing factors, can lead to breakouts.

Age Spots

No matter how young you feel inside, age spots (a.k.a. liver spots) can belie your true years. Luckily, effective treatments for age spots are available and Christos Skin Clinic offers them.

Overview

Age spots, also known as liver spots, are dark patches that appear on the skin during the aging process caused by accumulated sun damage over the years - something that's easy to experience here in sunny Florida.

Signs and Symptoms

Age spots are flat, brown spots that appear on sun-exposed areas such as the arms, face and chest over time. They do not cause pain or itching but many people view them as an unwanted sign of aging.

Aging Skin

Aging skin may be inevitable by nature, but at Christos Skin Clinic, it is also preventable and reversible. Our cosmetic dermatology providers can develop a skincare plan to help you restore and maintain a more youthful, vibrant look at any age

Overview

The skin changes with age, but other factors play a major role as well. Sunlight, cigarette smoking, genetics, stress and other lifestyle factors all effect the way your skin ages over time.

Signs and Symptoms

Aging skin eventually begins to thin and loses production of collagen, the fatty layers underneath the skin's surface that make it less smooth and less plump. Healing takes longer and bruises are more common due to thinning of the skin. Some examples of aging skin are loss of moisture, sagging skin, wrinkles, discoloration and age spots.
Another mark of aging skin is benign lesions including cherry hemangiomas (little red spots), telangectasias (red veins), seborrheic keratoses (brown wart-like growths), sebaceous hyperplasias (yellow, shiny bumps) and skin tags (acrochordans) - all of which can be removed by Christos Skin Clinic Providers.

Dyschromia

Ever notice a discoloration in patches of your skin? It could be dyschromia. Treatments at Christos Doctors Skin Clinic can help erase this hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation of the skin that's caused by any of multiple factors, including pregnancy, hormonal changes or a fungal infection.

Overview

Dyschromia is a condition marked by an alteration of color on the skin, hair or nails. The color of the skin is dependent on how many melanocytes a person has. Hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation are used to describe light or dark patches on the skin. Melasma is often a diagnosis of dark patches, whereas Vitiligo typically is a diagnosis of light patches.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is made by clinical examination and patient history. Hypopigmentation such as vitiligo can start as one patch and grow into multiple patches or even whole areas of light skin, sometimes affecting the whole body. Light patches on the skin could also be part of eczema (pityriasis alba) or a fungal infection (tinea versicolor). Each condition has different dyschromia treatments so an Christos Skin Clinic examination is necessary.

Follow up and Outcomes

For prevention and daily maintenance of dyschromia, treatment should involve proper sun protection. We recommend using Antioxidant Sunscreen spray SPF 25, which provides broad-spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays with no chemical sun fillers. It contains the FDA approved physical blocker Zinc Oxide to reflect light away from the skin.

Treatments for Eczema and Atopic Dermatitis

Eczema and atopic dermatitis can be unsightly, itchy and even painful. If you suffer from one of these skin conditions, Christos Skin Clinic an help. Skincare providers at Christos Doctors skin Clinic have successfully treated countless patients to achieve clear, smooth, itch-free skin.

Overview

Eczema is commonly known as atopic dermatitis, but can also be split into types called nummular eczema and dyshidrotic eczema. Atopic dermatitis often begins in infancy or childhood and causes severe itching along with a red, patchy, dry rash. Nummular eczema typically appears in a round pattern, and dyshidrotic eczema usually begins with small water blisters on the hands and feet.

Signs and Symptoms

Eczema can appear in infants as young as two or three months old, beginning as an itchy, dry, red rash on the face and/or scalp. In children aged two years and older, it is more commonly seen on the neck, wrists, ankles and creases of the knees and elbows. Eczema in older children typically is bumpy in texture and can cause skin to thicken due to itching. Atopic Dermatitis is rare in adults unless they experienced in childhood. In adults, it presents as very dry and scaly and appears on the neck and face, around the eyes, on the trunk, and in knee and elbow creases.

Diagnosis and Treatment

At Christos Doctors Skin Clinic, the diagnosis of eczema (nummular or dyshidrotic) or atopic dermatitis is based on clinical signs and symptoms, but the skin can be biopsied to determine type. Treatment programs are designed based on the type of eczema and individual patient needs, and aimed at reducing inflammation, controlling itching, preventing new flare-ups, and clearing infection. Common medications include topical creams and ointments, skin hydration instructions, and sometimes antibiotics.

Follow up and Outcomes

There is no cure for eczema, but it can be controlled with treatment. Allergy testing may be necessary if there are other conditions present such as hay fever, asthma, or food insensitivities. Family genes may play a role in eczema but it is not contagious.

Nail Diseases

Your hands are among your most noticeable features. So unsightly nails can be distressing. Though dermatology is thought to focus solely on the skin, Christos Doctors Skin Clinic also provides diagnosis and treatment of nail diseases and nail fungus.

Overview

An infection with nail fungus can affect one or more fingernails or toenails and may begin with a white or yellow spot. The cause often is a fungus called a dermatophyte, but could also be a yeast or mold. These organisms thrive in warm, moist places such as showers or swimming pools and invade the body through small cuts or separations in the nail bed.

Signs and Symptoms

The affected nail often becomes thickened, dull, brittle or crumbly with a discolored yellowish appearance. The primary nail diseases are: Onychomycosis (The nails become thickened and brittle. They can be colored yellow, green, black, or white.); Onycholysis (This occurs due to detachment of the nail plate from the nail bed. It starts at the tip or distal end of the nail and "lifts up" the nail plate); Median canaliform dystrophy (The nail assumes a characteristic "fur-tree" appearance due to longitudinal splitting of the middle nail. This deformity can be congenital or acquired via constant picking of the nail.); Onychocryptosis (Ingrown nails become inflamed and red. They can become infected and filled with pus. Sometimes removal of the embedded nail is the only effective treatment.); and Onychomalacia (The nails become deformed, crumbled and frail.). It is possible also to have a skin infection around the toes called Tinea Pedis (athletes foot), a contagious disease caused by a fungus that thrives on moist surfaces, which causes itching, peeling and sometimes burning skin between the toes. It can spread to other areas of the body.

Diagnosis and Treatment

The medication recommended depends on the type and severity of the nail infection. The doctor may send your nail clippings to an offsite laboratory for further diagnosis if there is any doubt about the diagnosis or if treatment has failed. Toenails often require oral medication for up to 12 weeks in patients who do not have liver disease (these medications are processed through the liver). Blood tests before and during treatment may be recommended to check the liver enzymes.
A topical gel may be used either instead of or along with oral treatment for best results. Your dermatologist also may prescribe a special nail lacquer and nail file. Tinea Pedis is best treated with antifungal cream or ointment, as over-the-counter medications rarely are often strong enough to be effective.

Follow up and Outcomes

Preventative actions include keeping nails short, wearing loose shoes, avoiding exposure of the feet or hands to damp environments, and avoiding going barefoot or wearing open sandals. Breathable fabric socks and shoes are highly recommended, as are regular visits to Christos Doctors Skin Clinic where skincare providers can screen for recurrence and remind you of preventative actions.

Melasma

While it can happen to anyone, melasma is most common in expectant mothers. This blotchy brown discoloration of the skin can mar an otherwise wonderful time in a woman's life. But treatments for melasma exist. Christos Doctors Skin Clinic offers multiple options to help restore evenness to your complexion.

Overview

Melasma is a common skin condition involving brown patches on the face - most commonly seen on the forehead, bridge of the nose and chin but also appearing on the forearms and neck. It is more common in women, especially during pregnancy. In fact, it's often referred to as the "mask of pregnancy". Causes of melasma are thought to be hormone-related, possibly genetic, more common on darker skin tones and made worse by sunlight - which makes it a concern here in sunny Florida.

Signs and Symptoms

The signs of melasma are dark blotchy patches of skin on the face, arms or neck. There are no physical symptoms of melasma but many people are concerned about how patches look on their skin. The patches can become darker with repeated sun exposure.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is made by clinical examination and patient history. Sometimes melasma can fade without treatment, which is often the case at the end of pregnancy or when discontinuing use of medications that affect hormones, such as birth control pills. In general over the counter cosmetics rarely are strong enough to treat melasma. Home remedy treatments can also be ineffective or even damaging to the skin. Therefore it is best treated professionally at Christos Doctors Skin Clinic.

Moles

Marilyn Monroe's was dubbed a "beauty mark." But for many patients, moles are far less endearing a feature - particularly abnormal moles. Treatment options exist, fortunately. Christos Doctors Skin Clinic offers several treatments for moles, ranging from the harmless "beauty mark" to the one that could pose a serious health threat.

Overview

Moles are also known as Nevi/Nevus and are very common, especially on pale-skinned people. Moles can be brown, black, tan, red, pink, or blue. They are typically round and can be raised or flat. Normal moles should look the same as time goes on. Abnormal moles are also known as Dysplastic Nevus (DN) or Atypical Melanocytic Nevus (AMN) and can change in shape and size.

Signs and Symptoms

Moles that are new, have changed in any way, or are painful or bleeding should be examined as soon as possible and likely biopsied.
The acronym "ABCDE" is used to evaluate moles to determine if they are abnormal as below:
  • Asymmetry - a mole that has different looking halves
  • Border - An irregular or hazy looking border around it
  • Color - varied color among the mole or different shades
  • Diameter - moles greater than 6mm may be more suspicious
  • Evolving - a mole that is changing or evolving in size, color, or shape

Diagnosis and Treatment

In addition to screening your body at home using Skin Cancer Foundation Self Examination Tips, it is important to have an annual skin screening to have moles checked by a provider at an Christos Doctors Skin Clinic Coral springs-area office. Any moles that are identified as being suspicious are biopsied in the office using a small shave technique. This involves putting a tiny amount of numbing medication around the suspicious spot and shaving off a small piece of the mole to be processed in our lab for evaluation. The biopsy site is easily cared for with Polysporin ointment and a band-aid. The results usually take two to three weeks. If abnormal, we will contact you to recommend if further treatment necessary in order to remove the mole more completely. This is done within our office under local anesthesia to the affected area.

Rosacea

It is tough to face the world when your face is less than presentable. Such is the case for those with rosacea. Treatment options are available, however. Christos Doctors Skin Clinic specializes in helping patients achieve smooth, healthy and beautiful skin.

Overview

Rosacea is a common skin disease with four subtypes based on characteristics. Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea involves visible blood vessels with redness and flushing of the skin, whereas papulopustular rosacea also has acne-like breakouts. Phymatous rosacea is a type marked by thickened skin with a bumpy texture, especially on the nose. Ocular rosacea involves swollen eyelids with irritated red eyes.

Signs and Symptoms

Rosacea can begin at any time during life, but typically appears between ages 30 and 50, particularly in patients with a history of acne and/or family history of rosacea or acne. It is more common in women, but tends to be more severe in men. Symptoms often begin with facial flushing, which may involve the ears and upper chest, sensitive or swollen skin with visible broken blood vessels, and sometimes with acne outbreaks on the cheeks. It is possible to have a combination of several different types of rosacea, although phymatous rosacea is more rare and often progresses from the other types. Ocular rosacea often resembles a sty or cyst on the eyelid with bloodshot eyes and symptoms such as blurry vision and itchy, dry, stinging or gritty-feeling eyes.

Diagnosis and Treatment

The diagnosis of rosacea is based upon clinical exam and history of symptoms. There are certain triggers for rosacea that can cause flare-ups. Following a skin care program prescribed by Christos Doctors Skin Clinic and learning individual triggers can help to reduce these flares. Common triggers stress, alcohol, spicy foods and certain skin lotions and medications. Sunny, windy, cold and hot weather can be a trigger, too.
