Overview |
| Eczema is commonly known as atopic dermatitis, but can also be split into types called nummular eczema and dyshidrotic eczema. Atopic dermatitis often begins in infancy or childhood and causes severe itching along with a red, patchy, dry rash. Nummular eczema typically appears in a round pattern, and dyshidrotic eczema usually begins with small water blisters on the hands and feet. |
Signs and Symptoms |
| Eczema can appear in infants as young as two or three months old, beginning as an itchy, dry, red rash on the face and/or scalp. In children aged two years and older, it is more commonly seen on the neck, wrists, ankles and creases of the knees and elbows. Eczema in older children typically is bumpy in texture and can cause skin to thicken due to itching. Atopic Dermatitis is rare in adults unless they experienced in childhood. In adults, it presents as very dry and scaly and appears on the neck and face, around the eyes, on the trunk, and in knee and elbow creases. |

Overview |
| An infection with nail fungus can affect one or more fingernails or toenails and may begin with a white or yellow spot. The cause often is a fungus called a dermatophyte, but could also be a yeast or mold. These organisms thrive in warm, moist places such as showers or swimming pools and invade the body through small cuts or separations in the nail bed. |
Signs and Symptoms |
| The affected nail often becomes thickened, dull, brittle or crumbly with a discolored yellowish appearance. The primary nail diseases are: Onychomycosis (The nails become thickened and brittle. They can be colored yellow, green, black, or white.); Onycholysis (This occurs due to detachment of the nail plate from the nail bed. It starts at the tip or distal end of the nail and "lifts up" the nail plate); Median canaliform dystrophy (The nail assumes a characteristic "fur-tree" appearance due to longitudinal splitting of the middle nail. This deformity can be congenital or acquired via constant picking of the nail.); Onychocryptosis (Ingrown nails become inflamed and red. They can become infected and filled with pus. Sometimes removal of the embedded nail is the only effective treatment.); and Onychomalacia (The nails become deformed, crumbled and frail.). It is possible also to have a skin infection around the toes called Tinea Pedis (athletes foot), a contagious disease caused by a fungus that thrives on moist surfaces, which causes itching, peeling and sometimes burning skin between the toes. It can spread to other areas of the body. |
Diagnosis and Treatment |
| The medication recommended depends on the type and severity of the nail infection. The doctor may send your nail clippings to an offsite laboratory for further diagnosis if there is any doubt about the diagnosis or if treatment has failed. Toenails often require oral medication for up to 12 weeks in patients who do not have liver disease (these medications are processed through the liver). Blood tests before and during treatment may be recommended to check the liver enzymes. |

Diagnosis and Treatment |

Any moles that are identified as being suspicious are biopsied in the office using a small shave technique. This involves putting a tiny amount of numbing medication around the suspicious spot and shaving off a small piece of the mole to be processed in our lab for evaluation. | Rosacea is a common skin disease with four subtypes based on characteristics. Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea involves visible blood vessels with redness and flushing of the skin, whereas papulopustular rosacea also has acne-like breakouts. Phymatous rosacea is a type marked by thickened skin with a bumpy texture, especially on the nose. Ocular rosacea involves swollen eyelids with irritated red eyes. |
Signs and Symptoms |
| Rosacea can begin at any time during life, but typically appears between ages 30 and 50, particularly in patients with a history of acne and/or family history of rosacea or acne. It is more common in women, but tends to be more severe in men. Symptoms often begin with facial flushing, which may involve the ears and upper chest, sensitive or swollen skin with visible broken blood vessels, and sometimes with acne outbreaks on the cheeks. It is possible to have a combination of several different types of rosacea, although phymatous rosacea is more rare and often progresses from the other types. Ocular rosacea often resembles a sty or cyst on the eyelid with bloodshot eyes and symptoms such as blurry vision and itchy, dry, stinging or gritty-feeling eyes. |

| The diagnosis of rosacea is based upon clinical exam and history of symptoms. There are certain triggers for rosacea that can cause flare-ups.
