About Us

St. Gabriel is one of the most celebrated archangels among the Ethiopian people. St. Gabriel churches are founded throughout Ethiopia, some of them established dating back over one thousand years age. St. Gabriel feast day is traditionally celebrated twice a year in July and December mass is held once a week on Sundays.

The Ethiopian Immigrants that have settled in San Diego had carried this same tradition and established the church in 1983 by holding weekly church mass and St. Gabriel’s feast days in December and July out of Greek Orthodox or other Christian entitles, as time and space were available by the host rental Church. In 1996 the current St. Gabriel Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church of San Diego was incorporated. As the result of the active pledging members growing and demand for a bigger Church, the members voted and purchased their Church at 4808 –4810 Trojan Avenue, San Diego California in 1998.

Currently, the Church has over 400 congregation and 200 active pledging families and hold services every Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Church provides the following services: Sunday school for children, baptism, wedding, funeral and traditional family counseling.

St. Gabriel Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church of San Diego Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) tax-exempt corporation. The Church mission is to provide worshipping canons, doctrines and practices to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo faith.
