About Us

An imam from Bakersfield visited downtown garment district market in Los Angeles in 1999 and we were a handful of people wanting to do salah (prayer) in congregation on Friday. We realized we did not have a proper place to pray. That motivated us to establish a place for prayer in the market, in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. Those praying together were merchants working in their businesses in the Garment and Jewelers district. Thereafter, it was no turning back. Every Friday the congregational prayers were conducted and the assembly has continued to grow since, culminating in the establishment of Islamic Center of Downtown LA, a Mosque.

We are a group of merchants, city workers, bankers, etc. coming from all backgrounds and working in various fields in the downtown Los Angeles market that needed a convenient place to gather for prayers. SubhanAllah we established a place for prayers, currently a rented space funded by community contributions. We aim to buy a permanent Mosque building so we can continue to establish prayers and serve the community in Downtown Los Angeles CA.

We propose to make the Center a multifarious Center serving the needs of the community and the poor. We also want to bring peace and serenity to the busy life of merchants and business people and all in the marketplace by providing a place for contemplation, reflection, and remembrance of our Creator.
