Hand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb, which includes the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder girdle. It is a merging of occupational and physical therapy theory and practice that combine comprehensive knowledge of the structure of the upper limb with function and activity. Using specialized skills in assessment, planning and treatment, hand therapists provide therapeutic interventions to prevent dysfunction, restore function and/or reverse the progression of pathology of the upper limb in order to enhance an individual's ability to execute tasks and to participate fully in life situations. A Certified Hand Therapist can fabricate a custom orthosis (splint), which can be Static, Dynamic, Serial Splints, or Static Progressive in order for proper healing following an injury and or surgery.
The best treatment possible for all hand & Upper extremity conditions should be the Certified Hand Therapist, thus assure optimal recovery. The CHT is the highest level of competency in the profession and is mandated to stay up to date with the latest surgeries and practice within the field. The Hand is the most important tool in one's life; any loss of function through injury or traumatic accident may be devastating effect on their lives.
