Camperdown High School has a long and honorable tradition as a source of education for tens of thousands of Jamaican children over its seventy-five years of existence. The school started in February 1930 as a private preparatory school with six students, and gained grant-aided status in 1958 as a high school with 300 students. It now has an annual enrollment of over 1,400 students.
The school has a rich History in football winning the Manning Cup on three occasions 78, 79 and arguably the best season 1982 triple winning team that also won the Walker Cup and Oliver Shield. Camperdown also won the Walker Cup in 1988 with a very talented team who were one of the favorites to win the Manning Cup.
The school’s motto has been a guide: Solum Optima Petenda Sunt – Only the best is good enough.
Adonis established himself with Swal-lowfield FC in the President’s Cup and then represented the Mountainview FC team when they were the 1988 Minor League champions. He captained Camperdown High School and led them to victory in the Walker Cup Championship in 1988. He was also selected to the All-Manning squad. Adonis Maxwell was known as the “Destroyer” as he combined quickness with excellent all-round skills to earn selection to the Jamaica National team as a teenager (18). A consistent scorer, Adonis was a lethal shooter with either foot and was considered a complete player.
He also played for several teams including Arnett Gardens, Marverly and Hazard in the National Premier League (NPL). Adonis migrated to the United States in 1991.
Kevin ‘Benji’ King is one of the most versatile and skillful footballers to play for Camperdown. King started his career at Holy Family Primary under the tutelage of Coach Percival ‘Itesman” Cordwell staring for All Primary. He moved onto Camperdown in 1993-2000 starring in all his years with All Manning selection in 1998-2000.
King played in two youth World cups U17 New Zealand and U20 in Argentina. King was part of the youth setup at Jamaican club Santos United helping them win the Ksafa Major League 2001-02 before moving to the United States to play college soccer at Tyler Junior College, where he was named to the 2002 NSCAA Junior College Men's All-America team He transferred to University of South Florida as a junior in 2003.
King began his professional career in Jamaica, playing for Harbor View in the Jamaican National Premier League, and helping Harbor View win the JNPL and the CFU Club Championship in 2007, before signing for Crystal Palace Baltimore in the USL Second Division in 2008. He played 12 games for Baltimore, and scored one goal in Lamar Hunt United States Open Cup second round win against Harrisburg City Islanders on 23 June, before returning to Jamaica at the end of the season to play for Arnett Gardens.
