Calabar High school was established by the Jamaica Baptist Union in 1912 for the children of Baptist ministers and poor blacks, and was named after the former slave port Calabar, in present-day Nigeria. Calabar won the Manning Cup in 1943, 1977 & 2005; Runners up in 1934, 1942 and 2004. Calabar won the Olivier Shield 2005 but runners up in 1943 &1977. Calabar Won the Walker cup in 1974, Runners up in 2007.
Leon “Juvenile” Minott the little man with a big heart and vocal leadership that became his trademark throughout his football career. He helped Calabar to Pepsi final in 1981, Colts semi-finals 1982 and 1983, Manning Cup and Walker Cup semi-finals 1984 and Walker Cup finals in 1985. Leon was a mainstay on the Manning Cup roaster for four seasons from 1984-1987.
Calabar lost the Manning Cup semi-finals in 1984, and the Walker Cup semi-finals and finals in 1984 and 1985, respectively. Leon’s outstanding seasons earned him All Manning selections from 1985-1987 and All Schools selections 1986 and 1987. Leon was a standout in 1987 All Schools team that won the Caribbean Schoolboys Quadrangular Tournament beating Trinidad 2-1.
On scholarship at Roberts Wesleyan College, Rochester, NY, Leon was named on the All District, All Conference and All-American teams throughout his college career.
At the club level, Leon represented Barbican in minor league, Federal United in St. Catherine Hume Stewart Division One (as a 16-year-old schoolboy voted the most outstanding defender) and Boy’s Town in the KASFA Major league and National Premier League as a schoolboy. He won the KASFA Major league and National Premier League during the 1988-89 season where he was voted the Most Outstanding Junior player.
He earned his first National Senior cap for Jamaica during the 1987-88 season while he was still a schoolboy.
Leon “Juvenile” Minott played professionally for the Rochester Rhino where he was the first Jamaican to sign with the franchise. He helped the Rochester Rhinos to win the A-League and the US Open Cup.
David King ‘The Calabar General’ represented Calabar when they were champions in 1995 at the Colts level. He went on to be a standout player in the Manning Cup and was their leading goal scorer in 1995 and 1996.
David also represented Rae Town FC and Tivoli Gardens FC, and on this journey, he is hoping to lead the ‘Sons of Rabalac’ from out of ‘the valley’ to the hilltop.
