Shell is hard and well sealed. Kernel small and plump .Tree is medium to large, somewhat spreading, but not as much as Nonpareil. It works well in conjunction with a number of varieties and is very productive.
Nonpareil
Slightly elongate, thick almonds, with very pale and thin skin. The shell is also very thin. It is the classic Californian variety. Very early maturation.Also, Nut removal is relatively easy. Tree is large and upright to spreading.
Aldrich
Semi-hard shell with good seal. Kernel is small to medium size. Well sealed nuts and Tree is large sized with upright growth characteristics.
Carmel
Harvests about 2 weeks after Nonpareil and blooms with non pareil. Heavy producer, shell is soft and well sealed. Kernel is medium-sized and elongated. Tree is small to medium size, not spreading but more upright than Nonpareil.
Fritz
Semi-hard shell, good shell integrity, low suture opening. Nut has Small, medium plump shape, fairly wrinkled surface. Kernel is small. Tree is medium size with upright growth characteristics.
Marcona
A Spanish variety and is quite a large almond, of round shape, slightly rough and 25-28% yield on shelling; no double almonds. The shells are hard, making the nuts more difficult to shell, resulting in a weaker meat to shell ratio. Blooms 7 days before Nonpareil; harvests 7 days after Nonpareil.
Monterey
Heavy producer. Kernel is large and elongated. Semi-hard shell which is well sealed. Tree is small and spreading. Harvests 28 days after Nonpareil.
Padre
Hard shell with a good seal. Kernel is small, plump. Tree is medium size and upright. Harvests 26 days after Nonpareil.
